Help me understand the solar world!

The sun is a source of infinite energy and the energy produced by the sun is called Solar Energy. This energy from the sun can be directly converted to electricity using few components. Photo-Voltaic (PV) cells in solar panels convert Sun’s light into DC current. The Solar inverter then converts it into AC current which later feeds to home. The components involved in creation of Solar Energy are called the Solar System.

There are various parts of a solar system, below are the most important parts.

Net Metering is a policy that allows the unused power produced by the Solar PV System to be fed to the Grid to which the system is tied to. This allows the system owner to get concessions on his electricity bills as the amount for units fed to the grid will be deducted from the number of units consumed by the owner and the billing will only be done for that part of the units.

Is Solar for me?

Yes, solar power is always cheaper than grid power. Moreover, solar is a one-time investment while grid tariff keeps increasing every year. Therefore, by choosing to go solar today, you are locking in a fixed energy price for the next 25 years. Imagine, What would be the grid tariff and your electricity utility bill after 25 years from now!!

It is important to consider and ask the below question to self.

  • How much energy is my energy needs?
  • How much can I save by going solar?
  • What benefits will I be creating by going solar?

Payback period for your solar PV system stands for the amount of time it takes for your initial investment in the system to be recovered from the savings.

Return on Investment (ROI) refers to the effective returns that your investment would generate. The higher your monthly savings, the quicker your initial investment would be repaid and the higher your ROI would be. Typically, commercial & industrial consumers should expect payback in 3 – 4 years and residential consumers should expect payback in 4- 5 years. The ROI going solar is > 20 % much higher than any investment made.

Once the initial cost of your system is paid back, the energy generated by it for the next 18 – 22 years is almost free of cost.

Studies have shown that homes with solar energy systems sell for more than homes without them. However, your property value will only increase if you own, rather than lease, your solar panel system. In most parts of the country, going solar will actually increase your property value more than a kitchen renovation.

Getting Solar…

There are a few criteria that everyone should use when choosing a solar installer company. Confirm that your Solar Installation company is certified, licensed and have relevant experience in designing, engineering and installing solar systems. Check if they meet high quality standards. Meet with your solar installer in person before you sign an agreement to ensure that you are comfortable working with them.

It depends upon the size and sector (Residential, Commercial, Industrial) for which we are designing and installing systems. It typically takes one to two months to install the solar system for residential and commercial owners. For the Industrial and Utility sector the time period is longer and can go up to 4-5 months.

The size of the solar system is calculated based on your current electricity billing units, your location, and size. The usual benchmark for energy generated from a 1 kW Solar system is considered as 1,500 units per year i.e. ~ 4 units per day. This is a conservative benchmark and actual generation is different for different locations. The amount of actual energy generated from a Solar Power system in a year depends on both internal and external factors. Based on above figures and standard actual size of system is calculated.

How Solar works?

Since Solar PV works based on the intensity of sunlight it gets, your solar system typically wakes up at around 6 AM in the morning and goes to sleep at about 6 or 7 PM in the evening. The energy output increases gradually and peaks at around noon and then gradually decreases as the Sun starts setting.

There are both external and Internal factors which impact solar power generation. External factors which are beyond the control of a solar installer include the following:

  • Number of sunny days
  • Solar Irradiation
  • Day Temperatures
  • Air Mass

Internal factors all of which are within the control of a solar installer:

  • Engineering and Design Quality
  • Equipment Quality
  • Solar Installation Process
  • Maintenance Activities

Solar PV System doesn’t require direct sunlight to be able to work, though direct sunlight gives the maximum efficiency and throughput. The system continues to work even during the overcast (Cloudy, Dark, Rainy) conditions but the efficiencies are going to be reduced to some extent. The efficiency generally reduces to 80% during an overcast day. But in a place like India which receives more than 300 sunny days per year, overcast conditions are not a major concern. Rather, Rain actually helps to keep your panels operating efficiently by washing away any dust or dirt. If your solar energy system is designed properly, overcast days are not a concern at all.

A typical Solar PV System may be designed to shut down if the power in the grid is out. Not all rooftop solar plants generate power during a power failure; It depends on how the system is designed. The difference lies in the inverter and the functionality it supports. Grid-interactive and hybrid inverters supply electricity even during a power failure while grid-tied and off-grid inverters don’t. Alternatively, systems can be designed that can redirect power to a battery backup system from the grid in case of a power failure in the grid.

Maintenance

Solar panel systems are incredibly durable and since they require little maintenance for 20 to 25 years.To get maximum efficiency, we do recommend getting your panels cleaned once or twice a year with basic preventive and corrective maintenance.

If something does happen, most equipment manufacturers include warranties, although warranty terms depend on the company.
